Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

Pelvic floor physical therapy is a treatment to help address dysfunction in the pelvic floor muscles in both women and men. The type of therapy prescribed will depend upon the symptoms you’re experiencing. Some will require relaxing and lengthening of the muscles, while others may require strengthening the muscles. Also some treatment will consist of both internal and external therapy, and some require only external therapy. The Physical Therapist will determine the best course of treatment after meeting with you and listening to your problems and concerns.

Here are some conditions that can be improved or corrected with pelvic floor physical therapy:

  • Urinary problems

  • Urinary leakage

  • Urinary frequency

  • Urinary urgency

  • Painful urination

  • Difficulty stopping or starting urinating

  • Difficulty emptying the bladder

  • Bowel problems

  • Erectile dysfunction

  • Pain during intercourse

  • Pelvic organ prolapse

  • Abdominal pain

  • Pain in the genital and/or rectum

  • Unexplained lower back pain

  • Pain during pregnancy or postpartum

  • Pediatric incontinence or constipation

Chronic Pain

Chronic pain can be simply defined as pain that lasts for more than 12 weeks. Nearly 1/3 of the American population is affected by some sort of Chronic Pain condition. Chronic pain can come in many different forms and appear across your body. Manual therapy techniques to improve tissue health, improve circulation, increase flexibility, and movement ease are effective in treating many types of pain.

Common types of chronic pain and conditions causing chronic pain include but are not limited to:

  • Back pain

  • Neck pain

  • Headaches, including migraines

  • Lasting pain in scar tissue

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Neurogenic pain, from damage to the nerves or other parts of the nervous system

  • Diabetes

  • Sciatica

  • Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorder

  • Arthritis, or joint pain.

  • Plantar fasciitis
